Art is one of the components that defines our personal and collective history, adds beauty to our lives and evokes thought and emotion. As an artist and native of the state of Maine, my work illustrates my interpretation of our natural environment, members of my immediate, regional and worldly communities.
Having grown up in the western mountains of Maine, I experienced the need to walk a long, winding, dirt road each morning to catch the school bus. Like many others in our great state, my graduating class was small: 76 students pooled together from 5 surrounding towns and outlying territories. |
| My sense of adventure carried me to Hartford, CT for college where I studied illustration at the Hartford Art School. During which time,I spent a semester abroad living and studying in Florence, Italy. My travels throughout Italy, as well as trips to Germany, England, the Netherlands and points in between were captured through a camera lens as well as a library of sketch books and journals. Upon finishing college, I eagerly returned to my home state of Maine and spent the winter of 2001 managing RobinWood B&B where I brewed local coffee, made numerous quiches and turned the Inn into my own art gallery. That same summer, I decided to expand my repertoire in the small coastal town of Boothbay Harbor where I continued to paint Plein Air (in the open air) capturing the picturesque Maine coastline. Now married and settled into our home in Richmond, I spend the week as a marketing director and graphic designer for a Brunswick company and work diligently in my home studio in the off hours. |
| My primary media include: chalk pastel, pen & ink, oil paint, gouache (an opaque watercolor) and digital graphics as well as frequent experimentation with various mixed media. Typical subject matter includes: landscapes, formal portraits, situational portraits, architectural portraits and still life. The style in which I create is primarily realist but I often infuse that representational style with a taste of abstract expressionism. |
