Gouache

The opaque quality of this water based medium is very appealing to me. While I appreciate and admire the airy quality of watercolors and the skill required to master that technique, I prefer the deep saturation of color that gouache enables.

Dancer -2001
gouache and india ink on paper

The technique used to create this image involves both painting and wash away steps. I first painted the image of the dancer on white watercolor paper with white gouache. Once the portion of the paper that would eventually define the positive image was covered with paint, and fully dried, I used a broad flat sable brush to apply black india ink to the entire surface of the paper. After allowing the ink to fully dry I held the paper under warm, running water and gently rubbed the gouache underneath the india ink. As the water saturated the paint it lifted off the page revealing the origina white of the paper.
